“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in August 2013, and started Sinimet in 2015. I started training at Loyola Center for Fitness with Coach Carlo Fata in 2015. Our workouts include a wide array of stretching, aerobic and strengthening. Coach Carlo plans the training in advance and integrates the workouts with boxing which makes it fun as well as rewarding. In contrast, my workouts at other gyms were missing the fun and feel-good of boxing classes. Other gyms are typically focusing on weightlifting and yoga classes. With mixed results, their exercise programs prove to be unsustainable for the long term. Whereas Coach Carlo training integrates a wide array of tools which focus on Parkinson’s Disease with excellent results.
My personal experience was that I would get soap in my eyes while taking showers and developed a fear of falling which was resolved by Coach Carlo with imaginative balance routines. Also experienced inflammation and swelling of hands, feet and ankles resolved by overall training. Coach Carlo improved my balance and posture with ladder rope drills. We resolved muscle weakening with shadow boxing with small weights and adopted certain yoga poses for joint flexibility.
Specifically stated, Coach Carlo adds the problem solving element by mixing up the activities that challenge my limits and requires thought. He won’t just lead the same exercise in the same way all the time. He continues to train with new and different challenges. For me, relearning a motor skill and trying different exercise types helps push my brain as well as my muscles. The bottom line for me is to choose a training program that I will actually do! Coach Carlo won’t design a great Parkinson’s-optimized program and then Members skip it because it’s too hard or not fun. He knows how to balance difficulty and enjoyment!”
